HP ScanJet 5590 Digital FlatBed Scanner

Rating: 2 out of 5
  • Currently 2.0/5.0

My office purchased a few of these scanners, mostly for scanning documents, and purchased them because we have HP computers at work. The problem is the software overlaps with other HP software and causes some programs to not work. Also the computer will randomly not recognize the scanner anymore, causing us to have to unplug the USB cable and replug it to reinstall the device drivers so the computer recognizes it once again. Everytime we would try to open another HP program, like the printer, it would show an error message. It seems to me that HP would take this into consideration when making their various products, but I guess not. And if you call the company they will simply deem your scanner as defective and send you a new one with the exact same problems. So much for troubleshooting.

The scan quality is just fine if you use the flatbed scanner, with photos or with documents, but if you want to scan multiple documents at once and use the feeder you better make sure you have a backup copy of all of your documents cause it will most likely destroy them. Within a couple of pages going through the feeder the paper jammed. It took forever to get the jammed paper out, but I chalked it up as a malfunction that is bound to happen and tried again. After a couple more pages, same result.

In writing this seems like a great product, great price, multi-functioning; however, with the paper feed being unusable it makes the product basically worthless. Not to mention that the software that comes with it is totally subpar and debilitating to the use of other programs.

I would not recommend this product to anyone else. My office has since returned all of the scanners back to HP and has purchased a different brand which seems to be working much better.
