Radical idea: Not everybody, not even a male, necessarily needs a career ( a social identity)in life to complete them. Some simply need a job (service to the hive). Some don't need either!

Their focus may instead be on other life areas, such as relationships/marriage, education, children, religion/philosophy, the home, hobbies and creativity, personal value system, family, humanitarianism, personal exploration, appearance/the body, communication, exploring the unconscious, mysticism, etc.

They may still need to figure out how to survive economically, of course. If they do work, it may be only functional, and their true heart's attention may not be focused in those areas.

Because s/he doesn't sound like a nut case. He sounds like an immature kid of whom nothing has been demanded or expected, and who is simply floating through life. If he's sane enough to get a philosophy degree, he's sane enough to get into boot camp.

Immature kid?

My experience with Philosophy majors is that they're all a bit "off".

Agree with this. He doesn't seem to be focused or motivated.

Its nice to have people in your life who care and have your back... in a sense its holding you back.

Ask Santa for some motivation this Christmas.

Meh. I didn't see anything in there but arguments any student who took philosophy 101 could have trotted out, along with a claim of having been robbed at gunpoint, followed by the standard "you weren't there, you don't know". I didn't see anything that contradicts the view that he's an immature, directionless kid living off other people's generosity and goodwill.

Be a writer! Go back to school and master in English. Then hike the Appalachian Trail in its entirety. Then write for profit.

You know there are philosophy degree holders lurking about who should take offense and this line of posts, but won't. This is because they know better.

Yes. Please, if you feel massive swings in mood and energy, see a therapist and try to get a good bead on your mental health.
