lols..2 or 3 sessions with a therapist would be just the tip of the iceberg; controllers lie, demand, manipulate and bully, some resort to outbursts and violence. The thought of any outcome apart from their plan or personal motives, results in intense anxiety.

Very good points to make about the difference between controlling and leading. Still doesn't cover the bases. There are a very great number of situations that call for controlling people where leadership simply isn't suitable or plain doesn't get through. The winning ticket is to be able to recognize the difference between fear-based, self-serving controlling - and required situation management.

I don't personally advocate long term therapy...with a great therapist they can help
you FAST...getting thru your cr*p, waking you up to stupid patterns, bla bla...
I was with 2 therapist for 24 yrs total..helped each one pass their State Boards...hung out for
yrs with psychiatrists and the lot, oy vey, lol ....and have been in short term therapy...
I will advocate short term
counseling with an excellent person any day...I don't just throw
this stuff out without experience.
Just sayin'.

You're assuming the client is intelligent enough and interested enough to want to better themselves. This is not the case with garden-variety knuckleheads.

This is sooo true in my experience.

I don't know Miss Hepburn.... Controlling people don't seek counseling on their own, usually through marriage or partner where the stakes are high or they have a lot to lose. I've done the the therapy thing myself with a partner. Typical session, trying to control or manipulate the therapist. Or they act as though they get it to appease the partner, its temporary though..

And if all else fails, they turn the table and play the victim.

Yep, they're either the victim or minimize. I'm focusing on personal relationships and partners vs working with controlling management and employers.

But I've worked along side controlling obnoxious people too, just off the chart outbursts. I recall one were asked to resign, the other underpaid for the position, saving the company money.
