Just of the top of my head.

Are you really so obtuse as to not recognize the vast number of services that don't cease just because it's not between the hours of 9 and 5, M-F? I'm pretty glad my obstetrician and the rest of the hospital staff won't tell me my baby can wait until Monday after 9 a.m. if he happens to be born at 3 a.m. on Saturday, because, hey, personal life.

For some of us it works out well. I work midnight to 8AM. I live in a resort area. During the school year my son would be in school and my wife at work while I slept. My son participated in a lot of after school activities and I never missed one of his games. I was always available to pickup him and his friends after practice. We did have family time after dinner(breakfast for me) until their bedtime. Living at the beach and working weekends means I have my days off when there is less traffic and stores and restaurants are less crowded.

$hift differential is one good reason many people choose to work nights.

I got a better idea: Let's all stay home from work forever! Things we need will just happen by themselves!

You have to wonder how young the OP is, and how pampered they've been so far in life.

I am sure Europeans have third shift. I bet they have nurses, policemen and night clerks at stores. Some people like night shift, it has advantages and disadvantages.

Gas stations
Nursing home staff
residentail school staff
group home staff
on call social workers
insurance companies authing psychiatric hospital stays
psychiatric hospital staff
babysitters
suicide hotlines

A lot of people work only nites and weekends. About 1/4th of the workforce work "non traditional hours." Please be considerate to those who do. (like hold off those 10am phone calls)

Have you ever worked nights? Night shift where I worked was from 7pm to 730 am. Some people don't get to bed until after 9am. If you sleep 8 hours (good luck with that) you would be up and out the door by 530 or 6pm to be back at work at 7pm. It's soul crushing and don't even ask how it makes you feel physically. I said no thanks last Friday and put on my walking shoes. So far I love being unemployed I may look for an 8 hour hospital in the fall if I feel like going back to work, and it won't be on the night shift either. Unfortunately jambo hospitals are a 24 hour business. Some people actually like night shift. I liked the atmosphere at night but staying up all night is just too hard on the body.

Get into a car accident with your family in the evening. Call 911 and see if anyone answers. See if anyone shows up driving an ambulance to get you and your family to the hospital. Then when you get to the hospital, you had better hope there are doctors working there during the night to save your life.

As for other people, some people HAVE to work nights or weekends because they are a second (or third) job so that they can provide for their family. Yes, it is nice to spend time with your family in the evening, but if you are starving you and your family, you should be out working.

***edit*** I work for a UK company who has an office here in the states. They also work nights and weekends. Also, if everyone is only working during the day, M-F, when do Brits get groceries? Who serves them pints at the pub? Who drives the taxis all over the place? I could go on and on, but I don't think you would understand.
