Just wanted to let everyone know that I almost had a stroke last week, and it's been traced back to my Citalopram prescription.
I had been taking 20mg for about three years with a slight elevation in blood pressure, but my script was just increased to 40mg last month because of some issues in my life.
That extra 20mg almost killed me. Last Monday I had an "episode" of not being able to breathe or see on my way home from work. I called an ambulance and they took my BP which registered at 229/175.
I was admitted to the hospital and had my blood drawn every four hours for three days. I had a constant telemetry monitor which registered some Ventricular Tachycardia, and I underwent ECG, CT scan, transesophageal echocardiogram, and a heart cath, all within 3 days. My bloodwork was within normal parameters, there is no blockage of any arteries, and no clots anywhere.
When they stopped giving me the Citalopram, my V Tach went away and my BP went down, however, for good measure they now have me on Lisinopril and Metoprolol.
Just wanted to let everyone know to please check your BP regularly if you are taking this medication.
My wife was on it too for a while a few months ago. She's had two strokes before but it was way back when she was not on medication. Now she got prescribed with mood stabilizing meds...Cerequel or something...She has severe PTSD and slight bipolar.

I have a cousin that takes Seroquel for her bipolar disorder also. Glad she's off the Citalopram now, with her risk of stroke!
