All these people I know are planning on stuffing their faces with food during the game tonight. It happens at the movie theaters too

I don't get it, you wouldn't overeat if you just had normal evening at home to yourself so why do so many people use entertainment as an excuse to pig out?

Because any exciting event invariably increases adrenaline and stress hormones, and stuffing food in your face is calming. I absolutely need popcorn during a scary scene, it's kind of a block between me and the action..the scarier the scene, the faster I shove it in. Same with a game. It's just part of it. I don't think it's psychological as much as physiological, and just part of our social culture. Most cultures have food as a primary part of entertainment. Why do they sell hot dogs in the stands at ballparks? The Superbowl though is more than a football game, it's a a social event, and most social events do involve food.

I usually eat very healthy, but I got scads of fatty junky food for tonight. Gonna get it all out of my system and start again tomorrow.

People just like to eat yummy food. It doesn't matter what's going on.

Yes, an excuse to pig out once a year. That, and it's hard to sit and watch TV for 4 hours without doing something with your hands. Chips, and other snacks help with that.

Because when you're sitting there watching TV, you feel silly that you're just sitting there and not doing anything with your hands. I feel that way when I sit down to watch TV. So people grab something to eat because you can eat and watch TV and the same time.

Well for the Superbowl that is a like a party - or often it IS a party people throw to watch with friends, so of course food and beverages are aplenty.

Many people throw watch parties, and it's standard to provide refreshments when one throws a party.

I can see you are a recent arrival from another planet, so to explain, in human culture we have this custom called "breaking bread." It is part of the glue that holds society together. It demonstrates friendship and respect to share your food and feed others. You should research it.
