For some survival.
Without a life line check list ...It's hard to surmise which way one is apt to perform. As a giver or taker. Sometimes ppl give grief and others take it.
I've had to challenge myself to accept help..It went against my mantra to give.
I think it balances in the end...

Because they don't expect any relationship to last a long time. They get in, take take take until the other person breaks off the relationship.

Self-fulfilling prophecy.

that's how the real world works, give & take. givers must set boundaries because those who take never do.

Upbringing mostly! Some folks are taught to share and include others while some are not or only conditionally share. Users usually get their training from other Users starting with their own parents or other S.O.s. It is obvious when you look closely at how someone is being or was raised. Users are often emotionally damaged kids who learn to manipulate and use others and things to survive and thrive NO MATTER WHAT! Inadequate parenting leads to Using and Manipulative behavior in kids more than any other factor but of course, most parents will loudly deny this!

Personality disorders. Huge red flag for spotting a narcissist or sociopath.

I think there ARE those not inclined to give...at least not naturally. Although as human beings, society encourages us to do so.

But I think we've all been takers at some point in our lives, and in a healthy marriage, we're both givers and takers.

I don't think it's necessarily a psychological issue.
