So I've heard that some people put themselves in similar less-than-ideal situations as adults that are similar to what they went through as children. And that some people attract similar negative qualities in people as adults that they experienced younger in someone close to them.

As an example, a girl physically abused by her father attracting physically abusive boyfriends.

What is the term for this?

And why do people do this?

Have you ever found yourself doing this?

The French have a word for it, Déjà vu

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Déjà_vu

A 2004 review claimed that approximately two-thirds of the population have had déjà vu experiences. Other studies confirm that déjà vu is a common experience in healthy individuals, with between 31% and 96% of individuals reporting it. Déjà vu experiences that are unusually prolonged or frequent, or in association with other symptoms such as hallucinations, may be an indicator of neurological or psychiatric illness.
The phrase comes from French, literally meaning "already seen".

I don't know that I've heard a specific word for it, rather a pattern of behaviour that is learned and then repeated, because that's all a person knows.

Déjà vu is an entry different phenomena than recreating adult lives based on psychological constructs from childhood. Not even a related category of thing, sorry to say.

Continuum concept.

"The human continuum can also be defined as the sequence of experience which corresponds to the expectations and tendencies of the human species in an environment consistent with that in which those expectations and tendencies were formed. It includes appropriate behavior in, and treatment by, other people as part of that environment."
