Love is pretty rare. I think it's meant to be....it's special.
Humans are pretty messed-up; often disloyal, unreliable, dishonest, very selfish, etc. and if someone possesses negative qualities in abundance then they're fairly tough to love.
My guess is most people, if given truth serum, would declare they only love a very small number people. Me? Less than 2.
But, like the OP, I have an unlimited capacity of love for animals!
Very nicely, they pick up on that (random dogs and cats I encounter) and quickly warm to me so I've got an awesome thing going there!!
Mom, dad, dogs, bro, wife, kids...then GIANT GAP...then a bunch of people I really enjoy and I think are pretty darn swell (but if I am honest, I would not likely miss that much if they moved away, we talked less, etc - I realized recently that I don't really get attached to people)...then enormous immeasurable gap...the rest of the world (2 craps).
I try to carry love in my heart and sometimes it blossoms to life at random. I'd like to be able to find something lovable in each person. This gets practiced with varying degrees of success. It's not an easy task because - people.
Resentments can kill any spark of love dead for me and I consider them pure poison to my spirit. The worst are the ones I can really justify.
But there isn't room for joy and gratitude, for peace or love when I'm nursing a grudge. And that's what I really want to feel.
Two, unless you count the unrequited love from my youth. More complicated relationships with most extended family members.
