We have all done this. When you are looking at something but not registering in your mind what you are looking at but your mind is in a suspended state. A sort of dreamy state. Can anyone relate? What is the professional name for it if there is such a thing.
I call it "blanking out". I tend to do it when commercials are on. Lots of times, my husband will comment on something about a commercial that was just on. Because I blanked out when the commercial was on, I don't know what it was about, who said what, etc.

not sure what the "professional" name is...but yes, I can relate.
I think it happens when your mind is thinking strongly about another event..so strongly, that it's all you can concentrate on at the time....no matter what's in front of you at that time.
I find it rather frustrating when I'm talking to someone about something and I'm getting a blank stare...it's like they're not really there....and I know they aren't hearing what I'm saying.
I believe it's because the brain is busy at the time with more important/other things on the mind......just my thoughts.
It could also be that this "dreamy state" is something that gives us a sort of refuge from life.
A shutdown...so to speak...time off from everything, and everyone....a state of relaxation, an escape from always having to reply or express ourselves

Ha! Me too, maybe we’re trying to find AMSR in there, while the commercial is on.
Clouding of consciousness, also known as brain fog or mental fog, is a term used in medicine denoting an abnormality in the regulation of the overall level of consciousness that is mild and less severe than a delirium.
The sufferer experiences a subjective sensation of mental clouding described as feeling "foggy".
