As an xray and cat scan tech I seen my chare of things people swallow or put inside themselves. But usually it's little kids that swallow foreign objects.

Pica usually indicates mental illness, but those who eat clay (soil) often are found to have some mineral deficiency, and those who habitually eat corn starch usually have Fe deficiency.

Eating batteries reminds me of the time I drained old gasoline out of my lawn mower into a pan, and before I could stop him, my dog lapped it up...He immediately sped off down the street. I chased him for four blocks until he suddenly stopped, stiffened up and keeled over on his side....I guess he ran out of gas.

Now I am tempted to ask this person I know whether they have ever deliberately swallowed non-nutritive objects. I suspect them of having borderline personality disorder. I would also like to ask how they feel when they are by themselves. If the answer is "empty", then yes, they probably do have BPD.
