No, most people do what needs to be done.....and see little advantage in discussing it on a forum.

Well not only did I replace my HWH, but since my old one was working just 10 years old, I sold it. No worries about over zealous trash men. I sold it very reasonable and someone gets to fix a problem with out spending 300 bucks and I get a small amount of money that covers my install parts. And the Government gets a swift one to the center mass. BTW chunky cheese I guess since you are here talking about it you are breaking your own rule?

I guess you are the strong silent type. LOL. Just kidding.

The only thing you need to worry about are things like electrical work. Why? Should something go wrong, and your insurance company can blame it on the work, they will refuse payment if there was no permit.

Otherwise, it's your home, do as you can.

I just spoke to someone today at one of the big box stores. They said they couldn't give me advice but they have never heard of anyone questioning dropping off the old heater at the landfill off Cochran. They did say, DONT leave it outside though.
We don't need one but..........

We have way to much govt from local to federal. Big brother is everywhere & they constantly have their grubby & greedy hands in our pockets.

Just an edit of this post, this place is a recycling & transfer station, not a landfill. The only landfill around here is south of Punta Gorda. Most things dropped off at the Kennilworth location mentioned above is recycled (or so they say). The rest is transferred to the south charlotte co. landfill

every thursday (garbage put out) night we have at least 3 trucks with trailers driving by to look for scrap. get the phone number off one of them or stop them and tell them that you will have a hot water heater to trash and i guarantee the will be back. if it doesnt sit on the curb for anyone to see you should be ok.

from what i understand sarasota county does not require a permit for a hot water heater swap out.
