The podocarpus hedge on one end of our pool cage was full of them; I discovered them one day while fiddling with the pool pump; one bit me inside my elbow; all I saw was what looked like a small piece of orange thread wiggling around - a thrip. The next day the bite was very swollen and painful. I got the gallon size sprayer jug of Spectracide at HD, and now spray those bushes once a month - seems to keep the no-see-ums away too. Not sure what you can do with the in-pool invasion.

Sounds like water springtails . I have no idea how to get rid of them. They are almost microscopic and you only notice them when they are in abundance. Also, they come in many colors.

They eat algae, sludge, etc. around water and any items near water. Maybe a garden center would know how to get rid them. Or perhaps the state agriculture extension service knows how to control them.

Hey Oobie, its been a long time since I've seen you posting.
Nope, I haven't heard of, or seen the bugs you're mentioning. So we haven't had a problem, or a solution.
How are things up in Sarasota? How's school going?

Things are well, it's been some time! We are very frustrated with this issue. We had a solar system put in and haven't been able to use the pool at all--the thrips are all over biting my daughter leaving marks on her. We tried a load of chlorine, muratic acid and called out a pool guy. They were dying down, and suddenly are back. I don't know who to call. No one knows what to do, pool guys say it's a pest problem, our pest guys say it's a pool issue. Th thing is, we have no garden, and our lanai is bordered by rock. If this is a garden pest, why my pool??!?

Not knowing where you live, could it be coming from a neighbor's yard. Is there a canal behind your property. Do you live by woods that is swampy? I think you have to find where they are breeding and treat at the site. They may even be breeding in your lawn... Hope this helps.

I just googled it and found an answer that says to mix avon skin so soft and water together in a spray bottle and spray them, said theirs were dead within an hour. It also said to spray the top of the water. I've heard of it used for Mosquitos so I guess it's with a try. Worse that can happen is you will have a little oil slick in the pool.

If you try an oil solution like Skin-so-soft, just be aware that you may need to replace your filter element afterwards. Also, I would apply the oil without the filter running; the longer the oil sits on the surface the better I would expect the results to be.

Agreed, it may kill the varmints, but if you keep doing that, you will be replacing your pool filter a lot. They have a similar product that is made for pools (its sold like a liquid pool cover), it is supposed to retain pool heat, and it puts a thin barrier on the surface of the pool, and doesn't hurt your filter. You can buy it for about $26.00 at Pinch A Penny. They are all familiar with this product, so you won't have trouble finding it.
