Are there any apartment complexes in Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda that are not Section 8 / low income housing?

I believe you are looking for someplace to live while you decide where to purchase a home.

If that is correct why not rent a home or condo in a location where you think you might like to end up.

I've been talking to a number of friends here, and there used to be plenty of houses for rent around here, but everyone is talking about a big shortage and prices are really going up!!

The Old supply and demand syndrome : ) I had mentioned on this board not too long ago, that having been a rental property owner for almost 30 years, that I was surprised at the cost of renting a home here. True there are lots of determining factors when it comes to setting rental market prices , but a major one is average income of the intended tenant. Wages are low here and rents seem high .. Yet Apartments like Tuscana Lakes seems reasonable. Damages inflicted by tenants here seems, to be above norm from my observance anyhow.

There are very few apartment buildings in this entire area. Lakes of Tuscana is one of them. It is located on Veterans Blvd right off of Kings Highway in Port Charlotte. There is also the Murdock Circle Apartments in Port Charlotte. Or if you go just a little north of Port Charlotte into North Port, there is Toledo Club Apartments which are owned by the same company as Lakes of Tuscana.

You may have better luck finding a condo to rent since there are many more condo developments. Are you looking for short term rental or long term? Right now short term rentals are high because we are going into the snowbird season, which is in-season here. There are also single family homes and mobile homes for rent.

Rentals usually go either month to month, 3 month, 6 month or annual. You can try to the Vacation Rent by Owner site VRBO - The Most Popular Vacation Rental Site in the US too.

I would opt for either the rental house or condo option.

I'm guessing you won't be happy with the neighbors at the apartment complex.
