I need to get to organizing the garage now that the inside of the house is at least somewhat presentable. Our garage is, like many - block and stucco. I don't want shelving units that sit on the floor, I'm looking to mount shelves onto the garage walls.

I realize that I can use concrete nails/anchors but I was wondering if there are other methods that I just haven't thought of to avoid punching holes into the block?

One way or another you are going to have to use anchors. Screws in the cinder block will not hold much weight. You can either mark where you want to attach the cabinets directly or install mounting boards (1x4s) then attach to the mounting boards.

Best way is to get a garage system with a combination of tall cabinets, low cabinets with work space and wall-mounted cabinets. But whatever you do, plan on masonry bits and wall anchors.

If you want them off the ground I'd install a couple 2x4s horizontally with plenty of Tapcons. Then just mount your cabinets or shelves to those 2x4 runners.

I built heavy duty shelves with 2x4s and ply. For the money they are much sturdier and bigger than anything you can buy. I also got a few of those large stainless steel roll around shelves that hold plenty of weight and can be moved out of the way if I need to use my table saw or whatever needs room.

You can use what is called French cleats. Go on youtube and check them out. It takes a little woodworking skill to make but well worth the effort if you don't want shelves that rest on the floor.

I mounted 2x4 studs to the walls with a Ramset uses 22. Cal blanks that shoot nails into the blocks then mounted heavy duty shelving to the studs been up over 3 years with heavy motor cycle engine parts on them.

I have a 2 car garage and have installed cabinets in the garage. Most walls are from floor to ceiling (white) and I raised the lower ones by about an inch on wood risers.

*This is NOT mine but it is very similar.

That set up makes it easy to keep things well organized and tidy looking. You may or may not need the amount I have but trust me, you'll grow into it.

Just another suggestion for you to ponder.

Oh, I need a lot - I just don't want/can't have them below about 4' from the floor for other factors. That's why I specifically need/want shelving options vs anything close to the floor.
