Dragging somebody down vs. informing them of the realities of life are two different things. Informing them of what to expect, such as dues that you'll have to pay to achieve your dream can be done in an encouraging and supportive way. Shielding them from the reality that they may face is doing a disservice.
Sometimes tough love hurts both parties but the outcome is better in the long run.
Looking at all the responses that you received to your post, I can read where everyone was trying to be helpful. It's what we do here on the PG/PC C-D Forum, with the exception of a now-and-again new poster who likes to come on and make some waves (they usually don't stay on this forum too long). We all try to help, sometimes veering off the subject, but always with good intentions.

Sorry to bring this one back up but wanted to let everyone know that my daughter did get a job in her field as a marine biologist in Chincoteague, VA. Moved her this week. I got to tour the facility and it's pretty neat. She will be working with college students from all over who are doing undergraduate research. Much of the work will be out on the water. It's a great job and no years of "dues" needed to be paid
