That's a huge spread your talking about as well .. 9.9 for
me anyway , is the limit of regular manhandling / on and off by hand..
I presently own 2-2 strokes.. 8hp & 200 hp both are Older Units, (

8hp is hand mix 50-1 200 is auto-inject... both are noisy, smoky gas hogs ...and shake rattle and roll for the first few minutes anyway.. Good Quality 2 stroke oil is not cheap.. $20 a gallon
on sale and that's added to 50 gallons of gas They were called 2 smokes for a reason.. but most are bullet proof cheap to buy to repair and to maintain etc etc

Newer 2 strokes with a few exceptions are Quieter , Cleaner Running, Much Better Fuel Economy and Run Much Smoother and of coarse Lighter weight as well.** For some boats and applications , weight matters!!
I also own 1 - 4 stroke a 2005 50HP Mercury EFI Big Foot.. No mixing of oil much better fuel consumption quieter smoother running no smoke but for 50 hp its heavier than a much larger HP 2 strokes.
Newer is OFTEN Better but there are some early 4 strokes and the first couple years of the Fitch 2 strokes I wouldn't trade my Johnson Ocean Runner for and for some very good reasons.
Research The Hull Truth if you get my point? iboats sells 1 year old resort used, OB's for a pretty good prices and with warrantees.
For 15 years I had very close ties with the Dive Industry on Cozumel... Several hundred boats running almost everyday of the week year in year out and most often for 2 to 4 hours a day or longer @ 3/4 to WOT!!!
Pushing Very Heavy Boats!! When I bought New..... I bought Mercury 4 stroke that said there are literally THOUSANDS of 10 to 20 year old Yamaha and Johnson 2 strokes working everyday in Mexico.. As We Speak..

I have had both. If you can get a great deal on a two stroke, cool. Personally, the four stroke suites all my needs just fine and is VERY economical to operate.

If you are talking about a mercury 9.9 or a 15 2-stroke would be fine those motors are pretty much bulletproof anything larger I would go with a 4-stroke

JSYK all small Merc's since 2006 m.y. have been made in CHINA on the same line as IIRC Suzuki ? But Made In China for sure...
