I used to lay in bed on Sunday evenings listening to the Dr. Demento show on the little clock radio that I used. Good times!
I recall songs like: Fish Heads - Pencil Necked Geek - (and many more!)
I did the same thing Sunday nights from 9-11pm! My best friend from college had Tom "T-Bone" Stankus ("Existential Blues") as a Jr. High teacher in Connecticut!
"Dead Puppies', "I'm Looking Over My Dead Dog Rover", "Fish Heads", "The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati" - all great songs!
Of course - that was an different era - only 3 TV stations, no cable or MTV - so Dr. Demento was a huge deal for us and we would talk about the songs at school on Monday. Clock Radios were big deals to us, too! Go figure!
I think Weird Al owes a lot of his career to the good Dr.!
The way so many radio stations today who turn to those "consultants", I can see them saying "....NO NO NO NO..NO...NO Dr. Demento..his show didn't test well in Colorado so you can't air him in West Virginia !!' Many of them DO think like that. Hell our last consultant thought that our light rock station, other than our morning show should only air John Tesh and Delilah and nothing else even if it meant the weekends would ONLY be John giving his "information" or Delilah moaning about something. Ah we didn't take his advice alas.
I remember we listened to the show at night as well, on the clock radio before bed. We use to play it very quietly so we could stay up late enough to hear the whole show. Would be great if they would podcast all the shows ! Good laughs remembering this
Does anyone remember the running serial he did..I got the names wrong before...I THINK it was..."John and Mary"...whatever...this couple always were the blunt of his humor...my favorite recurring skit....any insight would be greatly appreciated!
when I was very young, I didn't have many friends, and spent a lot of time alone.
I listened every Sunday in Orange County California on KMET a long gone station that rivaled KLOS, the other rock and roll station back then that is still around today.
I tuned in at 9pm (PST) for Dr. D's top 10 countdown. But, I do believe he did a show for a couple of hours before the top 10, which for some reason i was never interested in.
I remember reading books until the Dr. came on........then I'd drop the book and listen....afterwards a couple of stations over I would find CBS Radio Mystery Theater with E.G> Marshall (although for some reason I keep remembering it as Mystery Macabre Theater.)
I don't think I ever made it through an entire show....it was just something to fall asleep to.
Times were much simpler then, and Dr. D. was a place in my head I could go and smile, and laugh without worrying about the reality of my dysfunctional childhood and family.
[mod]off topic[/mod] I'll always be listening.......
