How long would a commute from downtown Raleigh (Glenwood South area) to downtown Sanford take? Possibly getting a job in Sanford but want to rent in downtown Raleigh for a year.

45 - 60 minutes. (Almost entirely going against traffic, which is good.)
Time also makes a large impact on the commute the rush hour is shorter than say a large metro area. But 9am there is usually no traffic, where it's heavier if you leave at 7:30am.
But compared to a DC or ATL (my experiences) it's a cake walk.
There is certainly traffic here and I hate to be one of those people saying it's not that bad, but it's really not all that bad for an area this size. There are adequate roads around here IMO. The only times I've been stuck in really bad bumper to bumper traffic here is when there is a accident or road hazard somewhere. Drivers on I-40 can get stuck in this type of traffic between RTP and Wade Ave., but it won't last more than an hour in most cases, unlike DC, NYC, Boston, etc.
I'm from Northern Va and I can tell you the traffic people deal with up there is about 10 times worse than here. I was up there last week for a Conference in MD and I didn't even feel like driving to my parents house in Northern Va (18.3 miles away) after I got out at 5pm, since traffic is literally insane. I did one day and it took me 1 hour via 495 and 66 West and I thought that was good time. On a bad day it can be more like 1.5 hours plus.
The Triangle area has so many different routes to travel that this helps alleviate traffic somewhat. I see worse traffic on Saturdays and Sundays on the DC area interstates than I see during rush hour in Raleigh.
I commute from NE Raleigh (almost to Knightdale) to North Durham so take 540 to 40, about 35 miles, takes no more than 40 minutes. Im from California and the traffic here is great compared to California. The evening commute takes about 10 minutes longer but still not bad at all.
