Farm Stands aren't always cheaper but I try to support them. Watermelons were $5.99 at DJ's Farm Stand. At Kroger they have been on sale for $2.99 or $3.99. This is my internal conflict. The farmer's market in Raleigh is usually cheaper than the roadside stands. But I can't justify the gas and travel time.
BTW, where was the $2 pepper so I know where not to shop?!?
I buy a bag of 6 (2 yellow, 2 orange and 2 red) for about $6 at Sam's Club in Morrisville. They are large and fresh...just the kind I need for stuffed peppers...
Walmart usually sells them in season for 50 cents. We grow our own during the summer, and if you've ever done that, you can understand why the red ones cost so much. They take forever to get red and it's hard to keep then from rotting beforehand.
I was just in Harris Teeter today and took a look! Their green pepper was $1.49, which was their regular price (still expensive, though!) and red peppers were on sale 2/$4..
I have not found the same kinds of veggie markets I did up in PA and IL. We went to veggie markets that were Italian or Latino and they didn't have local stuff, it was same as grocery store in origin, but it was cheap and fun to shop at those places.
You may want to try Grand Asia Market in Cary or some small Mexican shops. There is a good selection of produce at Grand Asia and it is cheap.
What I don't understand is why they are so expensive. Is my memory failing me or was it not to long ago that you could buy them everywhere for like 3 for $1 (a couple years ago?). Every time I see a bell pepper at a $1 or more each, I'm dumbfounded.
