Middle schools in Cary are short on Science & Social Studies and substitutes have been teaching since school started this year. Is this true at other middle schools in Wake County or just Cary ? Just checking

The way it works is that the school is usually not going to fill any emergency positions (science/social studies) until it has a full count of all the students attended b/c the numbers projected aren't always the numbers that show up. There is no sense in hiring a new teacher just to have them laid off or hopefully transferred to another school. The numbers used are the numbers on the tenth day of school with all the "no shows" taken out.

Cary should be past the 10th day of school though. It is also possible that the principle wants to hold onto another position (careers, admin support, academic coach, etc.) instead of a teaching position that is not tested.

Principals would often prefer to sit on a vacancy at this time of the year and wait for a top notch teacher candidate rather than fill the position with what didn't get hired during the summer. It is easier to get rid of a sub than a bad hire. With employment relocation spouses of those relocating will appear along with mid year graduates. Also the flow of candidates from Pennsylvania may well have slowed down with all of the uncertainty about job security after the stimulus runs out.

Weak answer and if the principal is sitting on the vacancy he is a large part of the problem in stinko education in Science and math. 5 weeks into the school year and I have seen first hand the sub in the science and math classroom.... Handouts and BS going on learning?? Not happening. There are plenty of seasoned veteran teachers looking for work. They could find a good teacher in less than a week.

It's probably cheaper to pay a sub and I bet they don't provide benefits to them either.

You may not like the answer but has roots in truth. Like it or not. Many Principals do it. The seasoned veterans may have failed in their interviews to convince the principal they are good.

Jimmy Gittings, president of the city's administrators union, said he supports principals' autonomy and that any delay in staffing teachers is because " principals would rather have a vacancy or a substitute come in for a month than not have the best teachers in their buildings."

Just because you are not aware of does not constitute weakness of a response but in fact it might be your familiarity with the topic at hand. Do you also doubt that with the potential for teacher layoffs next year candidates from the extensive Pennsylvania State University system might be unwilling too incur the expense of relocating for less than a year worth of employment. Is that weak also? If your child has a weak sub discuss it with the principal and see if they have a time line to find a replacement.

Peace.

Don't know if they still do but Wake use to recruit in Pennsylvania as did a number of states. Budget cuts may well have cut back on out of state recruitment. They were not at the Penn State fair this year. Only time will tell if there is an adequate number of candidates still available to fill vacancies now and during the school year. Because of publicity and level of income etc Cary has been a draw for Wake getting out of state teachers.

At any rate here is the link of vacancies as identified by the Wake Public Schools web site
http://www.wcpss.net/perl/job_listings/job_lister.pl

You can see if your school is there and how many similar vacancies there are elsewhere.

I would much rather wait a month for a great employee than deal with so-so performance all year long and maybe further if you can't get rid of him/her due to the rules/regulations.

Principals often feel that way but folks in human resources usually don't. They tend to want to close the books as shortages can reflect on how well they did their jobs. Board members can tend to understand but if they are getting complaints from parents. It will be interesting to see how all that is going on within the profession impacts teacher availability here.
