It looks like my son will be going to school from 7:40 to 2:30 (Chapel Hill elementary hours) next year. It seems like a bit of an early start to the day! And it leaves a long time between the end of the school day and the end of the work day.

Has it always been this early in NC? And any advice for parents looking at scheduling around it?

I could have sworn my school day was 9-3:45 way back when I was in elementary school...

What time do the high schools start? Growing up it was always high school kids earliest than junior high then elementary (so the buses could be reused). I can't imagine making high school kids get there that earlier than 7:30.

The last I remember high school was 7:30 - 2:15 the same time we went they changed it from 7:45-2:30 to help with buses. I am surprised elementary school starts that early.

Middle school and high school usually have the same hours.

My goddaughter comes to Dillard Drive Elementary and her school hours are 9:15-3:45. When I was in elementary school we were out by either 3:00 or 3:15.

Maybe it's just that school? I don't know of any elementary schools in Wake that start that early. All the ones I know of in Wake County start between 8:30 and 9:15, although there are a handful that start before that. I don't know about Chapel Hill, but it's not an "NC" thing. I believe each district can have their own schedules and even in Wake schools, all of the start times vary from school to school.

That is early. I have a friend in Western NC who starts elementary at the same time. Our elementary school doors open at 8:45. I think the bell rings at 9:05.

Our Wake County school starts at 7:45. What's even more ridiculous is the time the bus comes - 7:00 - and then it sits in front of the school waiting for the doors to open. Now that's dumb.

Most schools in Wake start later, especially the year round schools.

Our school starts at 8:30 (ends 3pm). If my children rode the bus they'd have to catch it at 7:30am. We're 5 miles from the school and there are only 6 stops. Ridiculous.
