Hello. Please do not think I mean to be rude, I just noticed something and want some feedback. It seems like every nhood we look at has some kind trailers or run down houses surrounding it. I have asked people and they just say that is the way NC is...nice house, nice house, trailer, shack. But why is this? Why so many run Down areas & shopping centers?

I know I'm going to get slammed for asking this and the answer will be about $, but I have lived in many places and have never seen this before until I came here and also when I lived in Charleston SC in college. Is it a south thing?

Probably because not that long ago the area was rural, hell I've seen an old guy riding a donkey with a cart down the street before.

You've never been to Pennsylvania?

This is a human thing. Not everyone can afford 3500 SF, nor do they want it. And likely the shacks and trailers were there before the houses.

As you say, if its "every nhood you look at" where are you looking? I would say the vast majority of new neighborhoods don't have this. In the older area downtown where I live, there may be a few small older houses scattered, but I wouldn't call them "shacks".

Certainly in the more rural areas of the region that are now developing into "communities" you will certainly see this.

Where are you looking?

Its the flipside of no HOA.
I have driven all over the United States. 46 states and counting. I have seen trailors and shacks in all of them probably. The reason they seem so close to the city here is because 15 years ago it was rural. I often wonder where all the cows went when I look at some subdivisions. I moved here 19 years ago from NJ. I was suprised that you could drive 5 minutes from downtown Durham and see cows. You have to drive a bit further now.
The south does have an "thing" for junk...

Gotta get up north more...it's becoming a national thing lately...

I see it a lot too, but it's like a p.p. stated - what do you think was here before the subdivisions? This was a rural, agriculture based area. I kinda like the certain charm it lends to the area.

I don't think it's a south thing either. I grew up on Long Island and the only difference there is that the newer and/or nicer houses are formally separated from the dingier ones by town/neighborhood. It's the same basic premise though.

There are trailers and small houses pretty much scattered throughout this area (and most any other that doesn't have ordinances to strictly forbid mobile homes).

Where were you looking? Trailers, in particular, aren't a dominant force in the Triangle.

I'd rather have a shack with a lot of land than live in an HOA community. Puts one in touch with nature :P
