My husband and I are new to Clayton and cant seem to find any fishing holes?! We would like to find somewhere to do on land fishing like a pond or something. No bait shops either.

My hubby is a fisherman too. I believe you can fish from the banks at Lake Jordan. The State DNR stocks the following: Apex Lake, Harris Park Pond, Toisnet Lake, Shelly Lake, Bass Lake, Simpkins Pond and Bond Park Pond in Wake County. I'll have to leave it up to you to determine which is closest to you. I was using the following web site. Fishing: WarmWater Stocking List

It gives you directions to each of the "warm water stocking sites".

Good Luck.

I'm actually rediscovering fishing since I sold my boat. Jordan has lots of shoreline to fish especially now since the water is low. I had forgotten how much fun fishing can actually be now that I don't have to deal with all the idiots on the water.

Holt's Lake near Princeton used to have public fishing, probably still does. There used to be a store on the lake somewhere back from Hwy 70. Store sold bait & supplies, rented boats too, I think.

Orange Factory Lake in Durham and Eno River in Durham. Lake Michie in Bahama.

I caution you that most fishing is not allowed from the bank in Wake County (erosion). Look for a dock or a structure.

In the Clayton area you might try the four ponds at Percy Flowers. Buckhorn Lake on the Clayton side of Wilson is popular with folks down that way as well.

I never owned a boat but I went with friends a time or 2. With all the hassle of getting it in the water & back out, dealing with wake by hot rodding boaters, etc. I didn't care for it. I have gone places with no motor boats & rented a canoe or rowboat to fish from. I liked that OK, had some luck with it. I've always heard they are expensive to maintain as well. "A hole in the water you pour money into", is that the expression?

As a general rule of thumb they get expensive when they're not being used and are allowed to sit. However the expression is correct and it can be very true.

I went to the lake the other afternoon after work. Walked about a 1/2 mile down the bank out of the way. Caught me enough shad for bait. I baited my rods up and threw them out. Then I spent the next hour or so walking around taking pics, etc. Came back, took the fish off and threw them back out again. I never had that much fun fishing from my boat.

It's such a hassle dealing with other boaters and especially water skiers and jet skiers. I'm convinced the latter two don't know how to read? How else can you explain them skiing between a no wake buoy and the boat ramps? Bless their hearts.
