Wow, that just shocks me that they bus children THAT far away. 12 miles and 8 miles? Seriously?

I'm guessing that you are being serious and not facetious. . . .

Yes. My son is bussed 8 miles for elementary school when there are 4 other elementary schools within a 4 mile drive of our house. It's farther away than we'd like, but that's what our choices were.

Now. . . . when the new plan goes into place for the 2012-13 school year, we will probably elect either West Lake ES or Middle Creek ES, both of which are < 4 miles away.

Yes, I was being serious. My child is bussed just over 1 mile away, and I complain because there is an elementary school 1/2 mile away that we can walk to. I didn't realize that in some districts they bus THAT far. It seems crazy, and I imagine lots of money is wasted on transportation, not to mention time on the bus by the children. We are moving to CH in a few months, so we won't have that issue since the district isn't that big. But where we are now, we're in a big district similar to Wake. They don't bus quite that far, though, so it surprises me.

The population density of the area that I live in would not be sufficient to support that many elementary schools. I live in a small subdivision that is adjacent to a watershed and no development (grocery stores, etc) can be done. All homes are on 1/2+ acre lots and have wells + septic systems. Most of the land is still rural, with lots of small family farms. I'll bet that if I walked directly out my back door, I'd walk for 1/2 mile across farm fields before I came to the next house.

Aaahh, gotcha. I tend to forget that not every place is as densly populated as DC. There are 5 elementary schools within 1.25 miles of my home! In any case, if there are schools that are less than 4 miles away from you, and they are bussing you 12 miles away, that still seems a bit extreme.
