Can anyone point me in the direction of a reasonably priced laptop repair place somewhere in the Raleigh/Cary/Morrisville area?
The screen is cracked and it's not covered under Best Buy's warranty. The laptop is 1 year old. I called Dell to get it fixed and they want to charge $400 for a new screen. I paid $600 for the laptop last year so this seems a little outrageous to me.
If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I need the laptop for school but cannot afford to buy a new one or pay $400 for a new screen. thanks in advance...
Unfortunately the screen is one of the most expensive parts of the laptop. Even if you took it to a local place like Intrex they will have to order the part from the manufacturer and that will be at least $350 plus labor. Your best bet is to look on Craigslist for an inexpensive used laptop and sell your old one for parts. Make sure to wipe the hard drive if you aren't going to keep it.
Take a look on eBay, I'm sure you can find one. They are fairly easy to install. It may ship from oversea's but if it's a good rated vendor I would have no problem buying it. I have purchase a few cell phone screens and received them in about a week.
I had a similiar issue last mth....the plastic casing at the screen base cracked and though the laptop was still functioning, screen was dark. I was told from $350-500 too.
I sent my IBM ThinkPad with a cracked screen to a guy on eBay who fixed it and sent it back at much less expense than Lenovo wanted. Might be worth a search.
I stepped on my new netbook and broke the screen. It was around $250 for the screen to be fixed. On eBay they were $80. It's been 2 years and so far have managed to not step on it again. Depending on the screen there are just a few small screws holding it on, and a cord that plugs in. Very easy to replace. If you aren't going to do it yourself I wouldn't think about paying someone to do it, way too expensive, with the cost of a new computer these days.
Go to Xpert which is located inside the Rapid Refill? in the same plaza as the Fresh Market on Cary Parkway. I had the same problem last month. I was fortunate that they had a screen in stock. The screen had a minor scratch, so I got it for $100 installed. If they would have ordered a new one it would have been $175.
I called Intrex and a couple of other local shops and they were all double the price and seemed less than interested in fixing my problem.

Very good advice. For Dells, it is very easy to find installation instructions for screens. Often, there are even YouTube videos.
One thing I would NOT do, if you don't feel comfortable doing the repair yourself, is go to those "big box" stores. They WILL charge a fortune. The S5 is right. Stay away from Best Buy, Intrex, etc. Many local techies that aren't affiliated with ____ Squad-like stores can give you better prices, and better yet, will do a better job at repairs. Check out their reviews, ask around, etc.
I use a computer techie in Siler City for repairs. He and his techs will got to the RDU area:
