Can someone tell me what the ride is like from this area to OBX? Is it as bad as people are saying it is? We like to go off season and from where we live now in PA the ride is about 7 hours.

Wake Forest or Fuquay Varina? They are sort of on opposite ends of the Triangle.

However, I don't think the ride is bad at all...what are people telling you?

Yes, it takes some time if you you have to catch any ferries to the actual outer islands....but it's not bad. You'd have those ferry rides no matter where you go.

The southern parts of the coast are closer to the Triangle, so many folks just stick to those for short stays.

The outer banks from wake forest, probably about 4 hours, depending on where you are going on the outer banks. Kill devil hills is closer than, let's say, corolla (if I remember correctly!) which can add 30 minutes to the drive. We have gone to kill devil hills many times and it is usually about 4 hours. I haven't done it from fuquay, so I cannot tell you about that..........

Which of the NC southern beaches are the nicest and the most like the Outer Banks?

Technically speaking, Morehead City/Atlantic Beach is the southernmost portion of the Outer Banks. I live in Fuquay, and it takes us less than 3 hours to get there. It's a great day trip if you don't want to stay the night.

Taking 64 East from the Triangle area to Nags Head is not bad. I would say about 4 hours. Watch out for cops in the small towns you pass through, though most of the route is highway.

When we drove from our hotel in WF, it was about 4 hours-almost all highway, it was a pleasant drive, not bad at all. It was October so I assume that is off season.

I doubt you will hit much traffic even during high season going to OBX from the Triangle area because most people from this area go to the southern beaches that are closer. On a Saturday we didn't hit any traffic until we got to Nags Head, and almost all the license plates at Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck, Corolla, etc. were from Virginia and the northeast, meaning 99% of the traffic is coming from the north via Chesapeake.
