There is an app for state parks, you can download the park maps, trails etc and with GPS in your phone you will never get lost again! just search for state parks app...

we were talking about how cool this feature is and someone said only if the phone's battery can live for several hours of use. And here came a idea to put rapid (?? How ??) phone charging stations in parks for a dollar! Not a bad idea, revenue generation + useful for people!

This is awesome, thanks for posting this. Going to find and download this app now.

I actually got a solar charger from a daily deal website for $10 (called the Power Curve). It has a battery pack as well which you initially charge from a USB port so even without sun you can get at least one full charge on your phone. It only weighs about 1 pound so it's a good companion for this app.

Low tech solution...put the phone away and follow the trail signs.

I wanted to add that I did download this last night and it is great. Funny that Umstead didn't come up in my list of local parks based on location (I am in Wake county) but it does include it once you get down to the map level. I really like that you can download for offline usage as well in case you get out of tower range.

And Library Sue I once got lost in Umstead due to a trail sign being hidden by some leaves. I had a mental picture of the trail map so I kept convincing myself the turn was just up ahead (wrong thing to do).

It's the kind of park where getting lost isn't more than an inconvenience but having a map (I would have settled for the paper kind too would have certainly got me back quicker.

Are these the free apps that come up with "Official" maps for each individual state, or a single app with maps for every state included?

For those up us less unsure, it might be helpful to give the name of the app, if forum rules allow. If not, could you PM the details to me?

I searched for "state parks" in the Android Market (or whatever it's called now) and it came right up. It was obvious and had a pretty generic name, like NC State Parks. Hopefully I'll get to take it on a test run this weekend.

I just searched on the iPhone for "NC State Parks" and it came up with the Pocket Ranger. Very nice!
