Raleigh town is considering the possibility of implementing Stage 2 water restrictions if the drought persists. No outdoor watering allowed in this Stage 2 level!

I heard about this on NPR this morning. I can't even remember the last time we had a good deep soaking rain event here. I have given up on my lawn .... haven't watered it in at least 3 months, but I was really hoping to plant a tree or two and few shrubs this fall to spruce up my landscape and provide a little bit of shade for my "full sun" lawn. I don't see the point of investing in trees and shrubs if I can't keep them alive. Bring on the rain! Weren't we supposed to get some this week. Seems like they revise the weather forecast every five minutes!

I gave up on mine too. I tried to water it mid summer, but the scorching heat just did it in and no amount of water I used seemed to really help. Besides hand watering a few flower beds, I haven't watered in the last 2 months. It looks pretty bad though, I'll have to admit. The good news is that I haven't had to mow the lawn most of the summer . The bad news is that I tried to start a compost bin this summer and have no grass clipings to use for it.

We gave up also on our lawn. But I have a bucket under my Central AC run-off tube. I have at least been able to keep the plantings around the house watered and blooming. We are getting about 2 5 gallon buckets a day off the AC.

is that really enough water (AC) to be used for watering a lawn?

How about rain barrels? I have one but i use that water for my orchids. I don't think it is nearly enough for watering a lawn.

We can't get enough for the lawn - unless you live on about .10 - but I put in a lot of perennials this spring (new house and all) and I want to keep them living for next season. I was talking to DH about the rain barrels, but he said you need rain for those!

Using rain barrels is a great idea. But that implies that you had rain to fill them up. :0

Well that's exactly how it works. The barrel HOLDS the rain water and STORES them so you actually do NOT need the rain, since you already stored all the extra rain water in the barrel!! BTW my barrel is 50% full since the last rain!

drained the rain barrel 2 weeks ago

I don't care about the grass anymore but like N Raleigh Guy, we wanted some plantings to shade the lawn for next year, but will now put that off till spring.
