I am thinking of taking the plunge for a kamado grill. I know the eggheads love their BGE, but it seems there is more competition for them now. I see that Lowes now has a Bayou Classic and The Meathouse has a Kamado Joe. Has anyone tried either of those? Is the BGE worth the price difference? Any other local places in the Raleigh area to see/buy a kamado grill? I think Ace is about the only place for BGEs. Do they ever put them on sale?
We bought a BGE at ACE. We love it! I can't compare to the Kamado, but I believe my neighbor has one and they love it. It's pretty much the same thing. I'd check both out and compare.
You need to hit up youtube for reviews done by grill experts. I have watched a few and they seem to get good reviews. Char-griller got some good reviews when it came out. Only time tells how they hold up after a few seasons/years.

I keep my two Char-Griller's under a big tin shelter out back. I smoke only with mine, and I believe they're going to last a long time. I'll put the Char-Griller's up against any of them fancy high dollar rigs...of course it's really all about grill skills isn't it...not the price or how pretty the grill is.
My husband has a kamado and loves it. They are very heavy and you'll need some manpower to mve it. The movers are coming tomorrow to start packing us up for our move to Raleigh, they will be building a special crate for it. My husband is pleased that they are taking his kamado as seriously as he does.
I went for a Komado Joe at The Meathouse. I've only tried it twice, but so far, I like it. The advantages vs a standard Char-Grill/Weber are the ability to cook at very high (700+) and very low temps. I want to learn to do low-and-slow cooking, such as this 19+ hour one using a single batch of lump charcoal (Pulled Pork -- Naked Whiz Ceramic Charcoal Cooking)

I am staying with my Webers and lump. The Green Egg is cool and the competition is on to reduce the price. Ace has them. It is like a Family affair when you own one, just like owning a Harley.
So, we are considering a BGE now. I currently have a Jenn Air gas grill and a Weber charcoal grill. I had always been just gas only until a couple of years ago. We got the Weber and it is better for beef for sure. Still use the gas for stuff like shrimp, chicken or the occasional beer can chicken. We also will do full breakfast on it using cast iron pans. So nice to do bacon and not have the house stink.
So, anyway, we are looking to be able to do some low and slow cooks now and a Kamado style cooker seems like the best bet for home use. My main question is is it going to be adequate for straight up grilling of things like steaks or burgers or do I need to have 3 grills? My wife seems to have the bug to get a BGE but I too wonder if the premium price is worth it.
how dare you say cooking bacon makes the house stink!?!??!?!!?!?!??!?!?!
