Just wondering, but this city is so weird when it comes to street lights and lack of side walks. What gives. I mean Im driving on Glenwood ave at 8pm and its pitch black and this is a major street in the city. As well at Falls of Neuse, You get off the 540 at night and its like a rural little turn off when in actual fact its a major street. Sometimes near Durant road you can't see anything as its too dark. What gives? Are we a city or a rural town? I know this might not sound nice to the Energy saver but what about safety. This is the only major city I seen where I experience these issues. Does anyone feel as I do and if so is there anything being done about it? And the side walks, sometimes they are there, sometimes they just stop on a road. I just don't understand it.

Sidewalks weren't required for years, but are now being required when new buildings are done. Not much backfill though.

Money is tight and many newly developed areas have no streetlights. Very bad for those of us with poor night vision.

We've talked about the street lights before and yes it is weird, as I've never lived anywhere with less street lights than Raleigh. I think it is a slight safety issue, not only in terms of preventing crime, but also in terms of driving safety. I come down Ebenezer Church rd in the morning from Westgate and you would think we're in the middle of nowhere, where in reality there are big new and newer developments on both sides of the road and there is also industrial activity on the North/West side of the street. People jog up and down that road and I swear I can't even see them until I'm on top of them. So yes, I think street lights should be installed on roads like that and also on most sections of Hwy 70, which is also mostly pitch black during times of darkness from I-540 to Duraleigh Rd.

On the other hand though, it is nice for residents not having to deal with "Light Polution" and maybe being able to sleep a little better at night. However, I think street lights in the right locations outway those concerns due to many safety issues that could and do arise from not having lights there in the first place.

At the very least there should be street lights illuminating every intersection, but the fiscal cheapskates would scream bloody murder that their tax dollars were being wasted.

Raleigh/NC is so busy dumping all their money into re-doing the I40 (five or six times), they don't have any money to pay for the light bulbs.

No, seriously. I noticed this, too. I've lived in CA and NY and I've NEVER in all my life (and all the traveling I've done) seen a city that doesn't put in sidewalks and streetlights. Even now, on newly constructed / remodeled roads, they only put the sidewalk on one side of the street. And there's never any crosswalks, either.

It's like they WANT every household to have 3+ cars.

This was a big draw for my home purchase, tons of streetlights and walkways. I highly urge anyone who is looking for a new home to go see what the home you are about to make an offer on looks like at night before making an offer. My wife and I did, and we were ecstatic with how well lit our subdivision and the surroundings subdivisions were lit. You can't count on your neighbors to leave lights on, so streetlights are a must IMHO.

Said it a 1000 times on this forum. And yes I feel the same way you. It's just like that over here in Durham and Chapel Hill. I-40 thru Raliegh and Durham is the same way.
