Hi All!
I'm a single mom of 2 relocating to the area next yr. Wanting to know if anyone has regrets or if it's a good move. No family but wanting to start over.

I'm a single mom of 2 also, and relocated here last year. It seems that there are many factors that made it a good move for me and being single wasn't related. My ex lives here half time and I have friends in the area. I am now closer to my mom, dad, brother, SIL, and my ex-in-laws; they have all been a big help. Living so far from them was a major drag for me. And I was able to find a job here after 2 years of unemployment. Got a decent house and good schools for my kids.

But the reality is: being single still sucks big time, no matter where I live.

Single mom of two here too. My parents live here, and life would be much more stressful and expensive if I didn't have them close by. They are my afterschool care and my emergency back-ups. In general, this area is much less expensive, more family friendly and easier to navigate than where I lived previously (suburbs of NYC), so all that helps.

I have to disagree with Sue though. For me, being single doesn't suck big time. There are definitely times when it's hard, but in the overall scheme of things, I'm much happier now than I was when I was married.

LOL, well, I agree, marriage wasn't much fun! I was thinking more in terms of logistics. I don't have a partner to share the health insurance or the decisions or the chores or the vacation time with---those kinds of details that make single parenting more work. They aren't really going to change no matter where you live.

Ok! My kids would be 15 &12 when we move. My family isn't close at all. I feel like I'm on my own anyway. Almost got married. Happy I didn't make that mistake.

My kids are also 12 and 15. I managed to move them right before 6th and 9th grade in an attempt to minimize their stress.

Fortunately, school turnover here is high and the feeder patterns are crazy, so a new kid does not get an unwarranted amount of attention. If anything, they were bummed that no one noticed they were new.

I think our biggest issue was after school care for the 6th grader. Too old for a babysitter, too young to stay home all afternoon, no friends in the neighborhood to hang out with, no one to carpool to dance class with, etc.

I am also a single mother, moving to durham for the same reasons you are (I think). I have no family there, but my family lives in an area that is too expensive for me.

Anyway,I will be in NC soon, but not moving until next month. I am hoping that the friendly people of NC will be a new "family" for us.
