Next in the series: the popular Watts-Hillandale neighborhood along with the Ninth Street shopping district. This area is about 1/2-3/4 mile from Brightleaf Square and Trinity Park.
A view down Club Boulevard, the heart of the district
The NC School of Science & Math, an intensive residential high school for top students from around the state, is ranked one of the very best schools in the US and is located in the old Watts Hospital in the Watts-Hillandale neighborhood
Another shot of NCSSM
Here are some homes in Watts-Hillandale (including a couple as well in the neighboring Old West Durham district)
The Ninth Street shopping district. Used to be a 'mill town' for workers in the adjacent textile mill, now funky shopping and dining
More Ninth Street stores, including the locally-popular independent bookstore, The Regulator
Elmo's Diner, one of *the* places to go for breakfast in Durham...
Bruegger's Bagels on Ninth, in an old bank!
A cute house just off Ninth Street
The very unassuming exterior of Magnolia Grill on Ninth Street in Durham. To me this is the great contrast with Raleigh, whose Angus Barn you can't miss with the roadside signs and prominent location on US 70. The Magnolia Grill sits here in a former supermarket in the midst of a residential neighborhood... and just got voted last year the 11th-best restaurant in the US by Gourmet Magazine. Just more of Durham's charm.
Another great photo collection.
Reminds me of my junior year at state, when I was dating a "Dukie" and spent all my Saturday nights on Ninth Street for a whole semester! I should get up there more often, I miss it. If only raleigh's Hillsborough Street could be more like Ninth!
Great pics! I used to work at NCSSM, and I miss that whole area of durham! People really should drive down there and take a look. There is also a park in that neighborhood that is nice.
Great pics. I do love those older houses because they have much more character than the new houses being built these days. The problem with older homes is in most cases there is usually only one bathroom and not much closet space. Some creative renovations can solve most of those issues.
I am new on this site and have found so much useful info, especially from you Bull City Rising. You seem to know the area well and if you don't mind I will look to you for city wisdom. lol
thanks again
Thanks for these pics! My husband and I just purchased our first home in North Durham, and 9th St has already become one of our favorite places to hang out. We really love it here.
