It sounds like a great plan for you to rent first, and see whether you would really like living in an active adult community.
However, there are only a handful of resale listings in Carolina Preserve currently on Realtor.com and zillow.com. There are no rentals advertised. I'd suggest contacting each Realtor with a listing, and see if any of the sellers would be interested in a short-term rental. Otherwise, I'd check Craigslist, and maybe post an "rental wanted" ad. There has been a house for rent at $2000/month, but the owner is also listing it for sale at $419,000, so I'm not sure they are open to a short-term rental.
CP is not like some golf-resort communites where there are plenty of short-term rentals. It seems to have a high demand for houses, and low supply.
If you are completely new to Cary or North Carolina, there are plenty of short-term rental apartments, if you just want to test the climate and the attractions of Cary.
