I really like Coloinal Village at Deerfield right in Duke Forest. Quiet, dog friendly, close to everything, with screened in balconies.

That's University Apartments. Right in the Burch Avenue neighborhood, and across the street from the University Commons mentioned by evaofnc (both are owned by the same owner).

I love, love, love the neighborhood. I've never felt unsafe here, and I and my girlfriend walk alone at all hours of the day and night (including as late/early as 4AM for work purposes).

Very dog friendly neighborhood, and there's two unofficial spots to take the dog. One's the old Laundry at the end of Gattis St, and the other is on Oregon St.

What are your thoughts on Trinity Park Townhomes (Georgetown) which is near Duke's east campus?

I like the Trinity area, and so does our son. I am not familiar with that exact place, though.
We looked at a number of places around East Campus, and it seems like that is a popular area for renovators- so that usually translates to higher rents.
You really need to come and see for yourself as its a pretty mixed bag anywhere between Club Blvd and Main St. IMO. And we have come across a schyster or two along the way as well, so actually viewing a place is highly recommended; Craig's List is not, on the other hand. I know that there are plenty of legitimate advertisers there, but we encountered more than one less-than-honest individual through there, so I don't recommend it.
Do use the off-campus housing site for Duke to get a feel for the companies that deal with property in the area, and ma ke a few calls to see what they say. And get a good map! We were SO lost until we had a decent map... this is the first place we've been where companies offer their current listings on line and without commitment.

Another vote for Ticon Properties. I rented from them for years. Their prices were reasonable, and they took good care of their properties.

Thank you for all of your opinions. We are trying to research the area from another state and your advice is invaluable.

Yep, both complexes...

University Apartments is a little bit more expensive than University Commons, and they are different kinds of complexes. Uni Apts is a 1930's era building with all interior hallways, etc:

Uni Commons is more of a 1970's era building with all units having outdoor entrances. It's a bit cheaper than Uni Apts. I have a few friends that live here, though, and enjoy it.
