Thinking about relocating to Hillsborough (Durham, Carrboro: rentals, to live in, bus)

So I already live in Durham but my parents are interested in moving from NY to the Hillsborough or Carrboro area. What is it like to live in these areas? They are looking for affortable ($900 and less) and safe rentals that are walking distance to downtown or at least within easy access to a bus route. Does this exist? If yes then what complexes and where? Thank you
