I'm looking for recommendations for a bicycle shop and/or bicycle wheel builder within the triangle area that can take on converting a commuter bicycle to the Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal / front dynamo system. The work (as I see it) would involve sourcing the components, then building and installing a new wheelset, shifter and possibly crankset.
The bike currently has the older Shimano Nexus Inter 8 system, so I'm hoping a conversion wouldn't be technically difficult.
I second Taynxtlvl. Performance Bicycle is fantastic, all the people there are really nice, are from all around the world, and are extremely knowledgeable. I just got my new GT road bike there
This is the best solution. Frank is known in the biking community as THE wheelbuilder. he builds for professionals around the world. Possibly not the cheapest, but absolutely, without a doubt, the most skilled wheelbuilder in the area. (Most of his business comes from afar, he's "that good".)
Their mechanic on duty was very nice and spent a lot of time going over the bike with me. Can't say whether or not he can do your job, but he was pleasant to work with.
With respect to all the referrals to performance, the OP is asking for a wheel-builder, not a mechanic. Not to say Performance can't do the job, maybe they can, but a real wheelbuilder is an art in itself. Most mechanics can build a wheel, but a true artist (like Frank) can build one that will last, and wont go out of true. Frank is in a class by himself in this area. If you are going to just get a wheel, then get one, but if you are going to drop several hundred, up to over $1k on a hand-built wheelset, then go to someone who really knows what they are doing.
The wheels Frank built for me were a bombproof heavy duty downhill set. And I'm a big guy. Those wheels are probably still round, and being used somewhere out there, several years later!
