I'm considering a job in downtown Raleigh near the legislative building but would like to keep a permanent address in Charlotte since my wife has a job there. Are there any inexpensive ($600/month or less) studio apartments in the downtown Raleigh area? Any inexpensive hotels I could stay three nights a week?

I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a place to sleep. Doesn't have to be the best area of town, but would prefer an area where I don't have to worry about getting mugged or burgled.

I know the legislators used to use the apartments behind the Doubletree/Brownstone on Hillsborough, or the studio apartments at Beckanna.

The apartments behind the Brownstone are called the Velvet Cloak and it seems like it would fit your needs. The Velvet Cloak shows its age but it's in a good location.

The Velvet Cloak is a former motel beside the Brownstone that has been made into studios, but I think the reference "behind the brownstone" is to some actual apartments in that location. But yes, with so many state legislators coming to town just during the week (like you), this city has lots of such places. You might even contact your own state Legislator and Senator for advice!
