Hi. We may have an opportunity to build or significantly remodel a house in Wake County (infill) and I have begun to search for an architect or house designer. I am looking for someone who can design something a bit more modern/contemporary than what I typically see in Raleigh - lots of windows, very clean lines, minimal trim, etc. We are not looking for an ultra modern structure with flat roof line though. I have driven through the Oaks at Fallon Park and like some of the ideas there - kind of Swedish farmhouse looking. Thanks in advance for any help!

Dixon Kirby is the builder who has those houses in OFP that you like so much. I just sold a house at 5001 Richland Drive - you can probably find it still active on Zillow. Look at the pictures and let me know if that architecture is appealing

Contact some of the builders out there to see which firms modified/designed the plans for the homes you've seen out there. Check the Wake Co tax database to see who built the houses you like.

That's what I'd do.

Thanks - how do you search the database for who built the house? I can generally only find the current owner not the builder.

go to wakegov.com and the search real estate function - sounds like you are already familiar with this.

put in the address. when the info comes up, click on "deeds" and it will list all the owners back to the builder.

Don't really know them personally, but I've been a fan of quite a few renovations and new houses these guys have done. Greg Paul Builders : Raleigh, North Carolina : Architect-Designed Custom Homes, Residential Renovations and Remodeling Projects they seems to specialize in just what you are wanting to do. The owners wife is an architect evidently.

We have a very modern house and are pretty familiar with the areas modern architects.

Here are just a few with good reputations (and I am pushed for time, so will let you google them):

Tonic Design (Vinny Petrarca)
Alphin Design Build (Will Alphin)
Centre Studio (Dave Arneson)
Frank Harmon

You can also look at Triangle Modernist Houses website to research these architects and others. Here is the page with links to local modern architects and their work. NC Architects DM me and I can give you my personal opinion.

I would echo the recommendation for Center Studio Architecture. I consider Scott Harmon a friend and Dave Arneson is also terrific. They have done a number of modern-style homes in the Triangle along with commercial properties.

Ellen Cassilly is also someone I think very highly of for her design sense and community giving. Here's a New York Times feature on her home: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/09/ga...tion.html?_r=0

Thanks for the recommendations - I am having fun googling!

I am not sure I am into something so modern, although these houses are pretty cool.

If anyone has any other Dixon-Kirby style design/build firms I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks!
