I've read the threads about having to take a written test to get a NC DL, but I'm looking on their site and seeing that we have to take road tests too?!?! Someone please tell me I'm misreading this!

And what if we fail all these tests? After more then 21 years of near perfect driving records, do we lose our licenses?

I think you're misreading it. It does say road SIGN test.

NCDOT: New to NC or Moving?

Officially (per the NC Driver Handbook), the DMV can make anyone take a road test at the discretion of the examiner, but I've never heard of it happening in the case of someone with a current out-of-state US license.

It is at their discretion so just try not to look sketchy.

If you already have a license from another state, you just need to take the written test, the sign test and the vision test.
And, I shoudl mention, that the signtest actually throws peopel off a lot of times! They'll show yyou a blank sign or a sign with symbols and you need to know what they are. Obviously the stop sign or the RR track sign are essy to remember, but occassionally they throw some at you that are harder to remember off the top of your head! (Like a blank triangle or rectangle ).

I agree it throws people off, and the other thing to remember is, there can be more than one right answer. For instance, a diamond shaped yellow sign can be a sign for several different things so don't sweat it too much.

There's a cheat sheet floating around, see if you can get your hands on it.

Just got our license recently. Be sure to study the book...been driving many, many years and haven't taken a driver's license test for decades...it's not a pushover. As others said, review the shapes of the signs too when you study. You may get blank shapes and need to be able to explain it. The sign exam part is oral in conjunction with the eye test, then it is onto a computer for the multiple choice 25-question test. The machine shuts down once you get 80% so if you do well you don't have to answer them all. Good luck.

I just completed this process two weeks ago. They gave me a vision test and a computer based test. No road test was mentioned. I didn't study or anything, just showed up and had no problems.
