Hi,
I will be starting a job in NC soon. Our family needs to relocated from out of state because of that. We have a elementary school age son. At the interview we were told Mebane is a small town. My wife too is a professional and needs to find a job after relocating. I would like a commute of no more than 20 miles one way. What are some of the family friendly, safe neighborhoods with good public schools. Our budget for a home is no more than $450,000.
Thank you for any advice

I don't know the Mebane or Burlington areas well, but you might want to look at Hillsborough, which could reasonably be a split distance for you and your wife (wherever she ends up - more like to the east of that).

Your wife is a professional in what field? Where is she likely to find work?

Mebane is a small town. You could live there, though. I would recommend the Orange County portion of Mebane instead of the Alamance County side. Orange County schools are generally regarded as better than Alamance.

With that kind of budget I'd buy in the Mebane area and use the savings to put your son in private school. You can buy a really nice house for well below your budget.

There's not a great choice of private schools in the Mebane area, either, NYC2RDU, or maybe you had one in mind I'm not thinking of?

And basing your decision on how much house one can get for the money may lead to a decision you may regret come resale time if you buy in a market that is small with few buyers.

Is Hillsborough more desirable than Mebane when it comes to resale?

I know some people who work in Mebane but none live in Mebane. They live in Hillsborough, Chapel hill, Burlington, Elon. Mainly due to schools and things to do. Mebane does not have anything except tanger outlet.

That answer would be yes.

Live here two years now. A commute from Hillsborough would fall within the twenty minute or so range, puts you in a more "central" location for your wife and although small, the town is charming. Your real estate dollar won't go as far but your home will definitely be in more desirable location when time comes to sell. I am saying that without a crystal ball, of course. However, there are real estate professionals on this forum that can correct me if I am wrong on that.

Much luck to you!
