Cisco Systems to lay off 4,000 - San Jose Mercury News

That's 5% of their global workforce.

Not a huge layoff, but it'll put plenty of people out of work and on the search for new jobs here locally.

No clue yet. Each director knows how they fare with their HC budget and will start the decision process soon. I've not heard of any targeted whole group hits yet, but we were caught by surprise 2 years ago with a software group hit.

It's not the economy. It's more like executive greed for their own personal wealth at the expense of hard working employees and to please the vultures on Wall Street with short term profit gains but no concern for the long term health or welfare of the company or it's employees.

Because the executives get huge stock options and their salary compensation is partially tied to stock performance. IBM is marching towards an unrealistic goal of $20 EPS (earnings per share) roadmap (a/k/a roadkill) plan by 2015 and they are sacrificing anything and everything in the form of cost cuts and employee layoffs plus spending millions on stock repurchases to artificially keep the stock price inflated to hold up the unstable house of cards while revenue continually remains flat. If you really want to know what's going on within the walls of IBM, read the IBM articles written by Cringely which paint a fairly accurate picture.

I, Cringely Fulfilling customer requirements is a weapon at IBM - I, Cringely

In regards to Cisco, the employees delivered with a great performance and profits for the company but yet their reward is another layoff with loss of employee jobs...what's wrong with this picture? How many overpaid upper executives are losing their jobs at IBM or Cisco? The answer is none because they are protected through the good ol boy network even for poor performance while loyal employees are being sacrificed by the thousands and the executives rake in the cash for themselves in the form of huge bonuses and stock options.

This layoff will be good for the overall health of the company. I say this as the wife of a Cisco enployee. He could get laid off. Anyone could. I just think that companies have to keep themselves in business long term.
