It's too late for me this year. I'm stuck with a "fresh" but obviously previously frozen turkey from Harris Teeter this year.

For next year does anyone know how I can get my hands on a reasonably-priced fresh turkey that hasn't been frozen? I'm sure something like that is available at Whole Foods but I'd prefer not to pay Whole Foods prices.

Thanks.

Jackie

How much are the Harris Teeter "fresh" turkeys? I'm paying $1.99/lb for the Whole Foods fresh turkey this year. I thought I saw $2.99/lb at Harris Teeter tonight...but I wasn't paying 100% attention so could be COMPLETELY incorrect on that Harris Teeter price.

Whole foods. I'm not a big Whole Foods fan and rarely shop there, but for a fresh, unfrozen turkey, I would recommend it.

Growing Small Farms: Pastured Turkeys at Peregrine Farm
Quote:
The turkeys are processed right before Thanksgiving at a USDA-inspected plant in Chatham County and sold fresh to consumers through the Carrboro Farmers' Market.

I paid 99 cents a pound (using my HT card) for my "fresh" turkey from Harris Teeter. I am sure it will be fine but I just don't like it that they claim it is "fresh" when it has obviously been frozen at some point.

Whole Foods birds are $2/lb and Weaver St. birds are $2.30/lb. How much are the Peregrine Farm turkeys?

Jackie, did you ever get a turkey from the farm in Westboro, MA? I almost did but they didn't have any small ones. My dad gets turkeys from a farm in Newbury MA. It does taste fresher!

Kelley,

No, I never got one from there. This is the first time I've had to do Thanksgiving in my house. We used to go to CT every year. But there's no way we are traveling at this time of the year. I would rather celebrate it at another time.

I used to buy turkey breasts from Stop and Shop when they were on sale and keep them in the freezer for Christmas and other times. We don't really need a whole turkey as there are only five of us. I haven't figured out the grocery stores down here yet and have not been able to keep track of sales and have not seen any large reasonably priced turkey breasts. Hopefully by next year I will be more familiar with the different stores and will know where to get the best deals.
