agree with posters that downtown hotels would be good options. This would be my pick if it were me. It's very safe down there. Another nice hotel in Raleigh 10-15 minutes from the convention center is the Renaissance at North Hills. Its a nice walkable area which has a pub, nice restaurants and shopping.
make sure you visit pullen park if it is nice out.
also, NC Museums are a must see - museum of art on blueridge, museum of history downtown and museum of science downtown in addition to marbles/imax. there is a tour of historic sites - you can do a walking tour of the capital.
We have never visited Raleigh, but are coming in for an event at the convention center. What part of town would be recommended that is safe for a family and convenient to restaurants? We don't have to be right downtown; we have no problem driving to the convention center. We're looking for an equivalent to Ballantyne or Piper Glen if you're familiar with Charlotte. Thanks!
Another voice suggesting you stay downtown. I have no idea why you wouldn't want to.
