We got out first bill since we moved into our home, 2400 sqft. Previously an apartment dweller. It was for 13 days. I was a bit surprised at the bill amount , hence checking here .
Water heater and HVAC (heater) is gas. We keep down stairs around 69 to 71 and upstairs at 68 F.
Makes sense. My home is a smaller and I average similar temperatures as you. That's basically half of a month. Last month I was $108 for the full month which was 32 days.
If you home is energy-star qualified, and you have the certificate to prove it, then you can call PSNC and Duke to receive your discount rate. It's not huge but I save maybe $10/month between the two of them.
I have 2300 sq/ft and paid $142 last month. Multiplying your 13 day bill by 2.307 (for 30 days) comes to $145. I'd say you're right in line with expectations. I too have gas water heater and furnaces.
Check that your fireplace damper is closed unless you are burning the fireplace.
It is a huge and expensive hole to the outside that pulls a lot of heat out of the house.
Of course, with the gas burner in place, it should have a clamp on it that keeps it cracked open so you cannot suffocate yourselves inadvertently with CO from combustion.
But, make sure it is either closed tight or closed as tightly as the clamp will allow.
Lately, the PSNC bills I've seen posted here seem fairly appropriate for the square footage and nothing to worry about, IMO.
Wait till you see your electric bills for AC in the summer, then you'll be properly initiated to the southeast
My gas bill in the winter is the same as my electric in the summer. The actual cost of the ac is quite a bit lower than the gas (since I use electricity for much more than just ac)

Ha! SO true! I am grateful for winter bills as it gives me a chance to save $$ for the summer bills
