Up here in NYC we have school safety agents in the schools. They aren't armed, they work under the supervision of police. It has come to my attention that security of schools there are by the police? is this so? Does the school have an officer on premise? Please share with me.

Although I would hesitate in describing the role of school resource officers as being responsible for school security. They are part of school security, certainly.

Many middle and high schools also have contract unarmed security. The School Resource Officer (a Police Officer or Sheriff's Deputy) is not really "the" school security, but more a part of the bigger picture like a previous poster typed. The SRO's do stay on campus almost entirely.

The NC Department of Public Safety defines them as:

Quote:
School Resource Officers (SROs) serve as comprehensive resources in the schools to which they are assigned. The Center for Safer Schools' research-derived definition of an SRO is: a certified law enforcement officer who is permanently assigned to provide coverage to a school or a set of schools. The SRO is specifically trained to perform three roles: law enforcement officer; law-related counselor; and law-related education teacher. The SRO is not necessarily a DARE officer (although many have received such training), security guard or officer who has been placed temporarily in a school in response to a crisis situation; but rather acts as a comprehensive resource for his/her school.
Yes, they are generally armed.

Yeah... armed. It's not a bad thing, trust me.

They get to know the kids, see the parents coming and going... I'd imagine that any unusual people/activity would not go unnoticed so easily.
