Greetings
We are moving to Durham mid-Jan '09 and growing progressively more concerned over the difficulties in even getting a call back or interview much less actually finding a job (we bought a house in Durham but we are still in NY at the moment; relocating has been overwhelming to say the least and we have probably made a million or so mistakes thus far but as a final stage in the process my husband is trying to get a job in NC before he resigns from his job here in NY and it is proving to be waaay more difficult than we anticipated. It's looking grim and we are actually contemplating me and our daughter moving without him while he continues searching from NY. This is not what we want to happen but not sure how else to proceed, any tips on things to do/avoid when applying for jobs out of state as well as others' experiences in relocating their family would be veeery appreciated, thanks a bunch!!!
This topic has been discussed many many times before on this forum. My suggestion is to use the "Search" function provided, read all of the other postings on this topic, and then if you have any additional questions, ask away. We'll help all we can.
Has anyone thought about getting a PO box or something actually in Durham and have your mail forwarded to your home out of state but using that 'address' on your applications? Just a random thought.
If you need any info on Durham feel free to send me a message.
Hey Fester600,
Actually I recently changed the addy on my husband's resume to our Durham one and he has already received a call back, so I think you are right in that when the address is a NC one rather than a NY one the employer prob takes the applicant more seriously, thanks!
Yes, there are many threads and I responded to a few as this is an issue close to our family's situation. I did a search for the ones I responded to and posted a few below. In a nutshell, we used our local address where me and the kids were living (while dh worked in NJ and stayed with his mom) and got plenty of calls, but when they found out he couldn't come in for an interview tomorrow, many times that's where the problem was. So just having that local po box may not mean squat when the call comes in to schedule the interview. Some places take forever and a day to call you, but when they want an interview, they're ready to schedule you tomorrow at 2pm.
Hate to say this, but the PO Box thing is a dead giveaway. A local address helps tremendously, but when you are not readily available for an interview that does not bode well either. Even if the company knows up front you are not looking for relocation help/money, they see many other potential problems by you not currently residing in the area and being readily able to start work. The current economy is forcing employers to scrutinize potential employees in ways that you cannot imagine because the cost factor of hiring the RIGHT someone is expensive.
