I have been referred for pool therapy at Duke (Lenox Baker). This is my first time doing anything like this. I have been told nothing other than what time and where.

Has anyone done this? Obviously, I have a swimsuit and will bring a change of clothes. Should I bring my own towel? What about flip flops or shower shoes?

Any other advice?

Thanks!

Answering my post in case someone else shows up and needs this information!

The check-in people simply check you in. They don't know anything about what goes on inside that room. That's a shame, because it would be nice to have someone let new patients know what to do. All she did was point me to the waiting area and tell me that the pool opens back up at 1:00pm. I went to the waiting room and waited. Finally, a little before 1, my therapist came to get me. I was given a slight reprimand that I needed to be there, dressed and ready to be in the pool by my appointment time. I reminded her that it was my first time, and nobody told me what to expect. If I get a survey, I will make sure to mention that. It's a bit nerve-wracking to be a new patient and not know what to expect.

Once that was out of the way, I was in the pool. I can't say enough good things about the therapist. She had thoroughly studied my chart and new my case inside and out! (My post-op PT obviously had not!) The water was warm, and I was not pushed to do anything beyond my pain tolerance.

If you are going for pool therapy, I recommend getting a well-made swimsuit. (Mine was Land's End.) They are pricey, but they are made to hold up in a pool. You will need a modest one. (I discovered that one-piece suits are hard to find in the stores for my size. Most options seem to be 2-piece tankini types. If you're worried about coverage, you probably don't want to get one of those. You'll be constantly tugging on the tank to cover things up!) Flip Flops were not necessary. They do not have lockers, so leave valuables in your car. I was able to leave my glasses at the desk.

Oh.... and I didn't need my own towel!

Hope this might help someone!
