unless you are headed to ski country, don't bother. We had a ford explorer with 4wheel on demand and we never had to engage it. traded it in for a minivan and have never looked back. Love being able to hold 7 with all the associated luggage!

I find maintaining decent tires with good tread is far more important here. When it rains, it is often a gully washer - so having 4 good tires with good tread, in a v shape, to reduce hydroplaning (in addition to you lessening road speed) is more useful than 4x4 on a day-to-day basis.

Unnecessary. Pollutes the air around here more than need be. There are a ton of them here, though, so you'd surely fit in if you did go that route.

What are people's opinion about the usefulness of having a 4 wheel drive vehicle (not off-road) for the Raleigh weather and roads?

Thanks.
It's not useful. We get ice...and it melts in a few days. Snow is not the problem. You would be wasting money and resources.

I would never buy a 4WD vehicle for the purpose of getting around in the kind of snow and ice we typically get here. Tire chains would be a better option...just my opinion.

Or enjoyment?

Off-roading is a lot of fun.

(I don't own a 4X4

agreed what everyone else said-not worth the money unless you plan on going somewhere that you will need it......I do happen to own two 4wd vehicles. One was purchased prior to moving here and the other after I moved here. I have used the 4wd on them both, but not here. Only had to when traveling.
Whenever it snows here I stay home because #1 people here lack the experience driving in snow and #2 the usual small amounts of snow get driven on and packed down and turn to ice real quick.....and forget the ice that falls from the sky too....

When you need it it's nice to have. We have had a AWD or 4x4 vehicle for about 10 years now, in addition to my daily commuter.

How about off road trails? Are there many in the area?

Tons. Finding those will not be an issue in the same way one might yearn for NY pizza or a good deli.
