What is the best route from Wake Forest to Cary, NC? I will be working 8:30 to 5:30 and wondered if taking backroads would be easier than taking 440. I am new to the area and from watching the traffic reports it seems there are a lot of backups on 440. Any help would be appreciated!

You could try taking 540 all the way around to 64, then cutting in to Tryon there. It's longer mileage-wise and you'll have to pay the toll, but it could be worth it if it's a reliable travel time as opposed to traffic backups on 440.

It's going to come down to trial and error. And figuring out how which road is at what time. 10min on a road can change it from stop&go to moderately full.

I'd go West on 98 out of Wake Forest to Creedmoor road which cloverleafs to the right, then South on Creedmoor to 540. 540 West to 64, then cut in to Tryon.

Try to avoid taking Capital straight down to 540. At that time of day, it's backed up for at least a mile.

401 to 540 or 440 might be an option as well because 401 is an alternative to Capital and not far to cut over to from Rogers Rd. They also will have the super highway over there soon.

But I agree with the other poster that you will need to try several routes and see which works best for you.

trial-and-error, or leave about 5am and it won't matter

there is no good way...from WF to Cary we usually do 40/440 /capital or 40/540/50/98. I think the route depends on which local roads you're closest to. either way will be a hell of a commute.
